Overview
With the RDC region's population forecast to reach 1.2 million by 2030, protecting the region's environment is more critical than ever.
Air quality has become an issue in the region with the inclusion of parts of Barrow, Newton, and Walton counties in the Atlanta Regional Commission's Metropolitan Planning Organization, a federally designated area for regional transportation planning to meet air quality standards and to program projects to implement the Regional Transportation Plan.
Growth is increasing pressure on the region's streams thus elevating the need to better manage sources of water pollution. The Planning Division is involved in Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) planning and the development of Source Water Assessment Plans (SWAP) for many streams in the region.
Many local governments in the region actively pursue greenspace initiatives either through fee-simple acquisition or set asides incorporated into development plans.
